Smart lenses, which everyone has been talking about recently, are actually multifocal intraocular lenses called multifocal and trifocal in ophthalmology. These intraocular lenses, which are called "Smart Lens" among the people, have been used for a long time during cataract surgeries for suitable cases. Intraocular lenses are divided into monofocal, unifocal, multifocal multifocal and trifocal trifocal.

Patients who have monofocal single focal lenses in cataract surgery do not generally use distance glasses after the operation, but they use glasses for close reading.

What is Smart Lens (Intraocular Lens)?

Everyone has a natural lens inside the eye. This lens is transparent and elastic. Every time we look near and far, this lens changes shape and focuses on the distance being looked at, thanks to its flexibility. Thus, both far and near can be seen clearly.

As the age progresses, the natural lens in our eyes first loses its flexibility, cannot change shape when looking close, and becomes unable to focus close. In further ages, it loses its transparency and cataracts form.

Our own lens, which usually loses its flexibility after the age of 40, is replaceable with a new one. Artificial lens called Smart Lens (intraocular lens) is put in place of the natural lens, which is deformed by losing its properties. This new lens is now capable of focusing both far, intermediate and near, providing clear vision at any distance.

The eye number does not progress again in the patient who is fitted with a Smart Lens (Intraocular Lens). Cataract surgery is performed once and no more cataracts occur in the eye.

Who can wear Smart Lens?

Generally, people over the age of 40 who have vision problems at a distance or near or both and who want to get rid of their glasses for life are candidates for this operation. However, if the conditions are suitable, it is also recommended under the age of 40. The age of onset of cataract has now decreased even earlier due to environmental conditions. Every eye with a multifocal lens can see both far and near.

In younger patients, if the eye number is too high to be corrected with laser, Smart Lens treatment can be applied again.

If the person has cataract and wants to see both far and near without glasses after cataract surgery, smart lenses are still the first choice.

Smart lenses can be applied to people whose eye number has been corrected with laser before, if they have a problem of not seeing far or near after cataract formation.

How Does Smart Lens (Intraocular Lens) Operation Happen?

Under appropriate conditions, simultaneous operation is performed on both eyes. The procedure takes about 10 minutes for each eye. The eyes are numbed with eye drops. There is no general anesthesia (except in special cases), stunning or overnight stay in the hospital. It is a painless operation. The natural lens inside the eye is removed and a smart intraocular lens is attached to its socket. The quality and type of the intraocular lens placed in the eye determines the postoperative eye health and visual quality of the patients. Swiss origin ringless lens is used. After the operation, the eye is covered with a bandage, the patient goes home, remains closed with a bandage for 2-3 hours, and the bandage is opened by the physician during the control. The patient starts to see on the same day and returns to his normal life.

Apart from the use of drops for a while, weekly and monthly checks are made.

What is the Importance of Multifocal Lenses, namely Smart Lenses?

They provide clear vision in the eyes at near, far and intermediate distances and are known as lifetime smart lenses.

The most important feature of smart lenses is the clarity they provide at intermediate distance. Clear vision is also obtained at distances where visual quality should be the most important, such as computer usage distance, television viewing distance, and the distance to reach the kitchen counter.

It helps to eliminate post-operative visual disturbances along with cataracts. There are special types for myopia-hypermetropia-astigmatism disorders and eye structure of the person's eye.
